You would be forgiven for thinking that to be in vogue, your room interiors must display bright colours, tons of metal and busy patterns. In short, your décor must follow the latest trends by avant-garde designers. That’s all well and good if you actually like industrial chic or mono bloc styling, but what if you prefer elegant, calm and orderly? It’s time to revisit traditional design.

Making Sense of your Surroundings

 

Traditional décor is reassuring because of its familiarity and organised charm. Nothing is an assault on the senses; it’s homely and comforting. It might remind you of your childhood, when life was less complicated. But before you go thinking that traditional is synonymous with boring, think again.

Colours

 

While the main palette to use consists of matt mid-tones, don’t be afraid to inject some colour here and there. A fairly neutral colour is perfect for 75% of the walls but use either a coordinating wallpaper or darker paint colour for an accent area, such as alcoves or chimney breasts. The drapes and rugs can also introduce different colours and textures, to offset the neutrality. For upholstery, choose from classic colours such as chocolate brown, olive green, grey or navy.

Furniture

 

Traditional furniture should be crafted from natural wood, such as medium to dark oak, walnut or mahogany. Pieces should exhibit
