Traditional décor has far too many conventions. Colours, materials and style have to coordinate and/or match, which can be rather boring, to say the least. After all, Mother Nature doesnt follow these conventions far from it. Alloy Your Metals
With the boom in industrial salvage, the demand for steel, aluminium and iron fixtures and fittings is at an all-time high. But once you put silver, grey and black together in your room, the combination becomes rather cold and impersonal. If you like the industrial look but want a bit more warmth, why not opt for some copper, bronze or brass items as well? Having a great mix of pure metals and alloys will keep it interesting too. If you fancy carrying on the metallic look to your walls, Dulux do a fantastic range and their 2015 colour of the year is copper blush, which oozes warmth.
Let Your Woods Branch Out
For many, having a room with furniture of different woods is a huge faux pas. While blending oak and pine might be considered acceptable, adding mahogany or acacia into the mix would raise eyebrows. But why? Whether theyre hardwoods or soft, pronounced grain or subtle, they all have wonderful characteristics and of course, theyre all made from the same, natural resource: trees. Provided you choose the right varieties to blend, the effect can really lift your room. If you adore rich, dark woods but dont want your dining room to seem claustrophobic, try mixing this
