Winter Is Here: GOT-inspired Décor
If youre a huge fan of Game of Thrones and would like to live in Kings Landing, why not theme your living areas with a touch of Lannister or Stark? Here are a few suggestions to stoke the fire.
Heraldry
First things first. Every kingdom needs its banner and you can get your own Game of Thrones coat of arms at Join the Realm. Once you've saved the design you created as a jpeg, you can then have it printed onto a heraldic flag here. Display it with pride over the hearth.
Fireplace
No self-respecting castle would be without an impressive fireplace and surround. If you live in a tiny flat, youll probably not want to be roasting boar on a spit, so instead settle for a dark wooden mantelpiece, with an open flame gas or electric fire. The mantelpiece should be as ornate as possible, with bold carvings. You can pick up dark wood pieces quite cheaply at auctions. Team the mantelpiece with an oversized companion set and have a few logs stacked to one side, for effect.
Council Table
While council meetings rarely bode well for attendees, even they were bound to notice how impressive the table was. You can recreate the feel of the Lannister hall with this exceptionally grand, Solid Oak Monastery Table, which will seat an incredible 14 people in comfort. The imposing, shaped legs make it a table to be reckoned with. Team it with a pair of these benches for a truly authentic feel. Keep large bowls of fruit and unshelled nuts on the table, along with some oversized, gothic candlesticks. While solid gold or copper plates might be pushing the boundaries, your floral Cath Kidston crockery definitely wont work. Why not use glass or solid black tableware? For wine it must be goblets, which can be pottery, metal or even wood.
Be a Mother (or Father) of Dragons
There is a lot of dragon-themed paraphernalia available but a clutch of dragon eggs would be a superb conversation piece. You can buy exact replicas of the GoT eggs online, however its very easy to make your own. All you need are some drawing pins, nail varnish in a variety of dragonesque colours and a polystyrene egg (from craft shops) or an egg-shaped candle. The candle egg will have more weight and stability. You could even give a few as gifts to other fans of the programme.
Accessories
Include a couple of dire wolf throws, that you can drape over a chair or hang on the wall. Some vintage, cross-stitch tapestries would also look good on the wall or instead, turn them into cushion covers. Curtains should be heavy velvet or similar, as they are meant to keep out the cold. To complete the look, install a Gothic chandelier such as the one sold at Lighting Styles.
Once your interior design is ready, invite your friends round to drink mead and watch Game of Thrones box sets.
