As so many of us took time off of work last week to toil amongst the odd jobs around the house, it is perhaps important to know the true cost of DIY misadventures.

Though a third of DIY enthusiasts will on average take to the paint brushes during the Easter bank holiday weekend, housework is also often rife during the week following all other bank holidays; efforts that often lead to unfortunate DIY mishaps.

In fact, according to research by Allianz Your Cover insurance, Britain on a whole has to fork out around £4.4billion every single year thanks to DIY clumsiness.

Whether you are constructing a beautiful new piece of oak furniture or merely painting the living room, making sure you know what you are doing is imperative to both you and your wallet.

The average cost of a single DIY disaster is £166; a price tag that is incurred to 10% of all those who embark on DIY work.

To add to this, Wilko's in their very own survey, found that six out of ten people rated their DIY capabilities as good or very good and only 7% rated their skills as very bad.

For those however, who think that DIY is a male job role, the truth is that men incur a far more damage than women, with the average male bill being found at £30 more than that of a female bill.

Despite so many people finding their hard work in the skip, the study found that 86% of people said that they carried work out themselves in order to save money, despite the consequences often costing more than the hiring of a professional.

If you're thinking of carrying out work this week, the top five DIY disasters include:

1. Spilling paint (35%)

2. Damaging walls (29%)

3. Breaking a window (25%)

4. Breaking furniture (23%)

5. Damaging a ceiling (22%)

To add to the problem, it was found that over a quarter of people wouldn't claim on their home insurance despite their cover being able to provide the costs for the damage.

Andy James of Allianz Your Cover said:

"We urge DIY enthusiasts to speak to their insurers to ensure they have the right level of cover in place to avoid their pockets being harder hit should they have a DIY disaster."
