Student Office - Oak Furniture UK

It’s almost that highly anticipated time of the year where the first term of university begins, and it’s creeping up faster than expected! Preparing for university often seems like a daunting process, with lots of different things to take into consideration and loads of things to remember, but it’s important to embrace these moments and enjoy it, because it doesn’t need to be stressful or difficult. Think of it as designing your own personal space, a space for you to work, relax, socialise and live! Here are a few things to put on your checklist to ensure that your university prep is as stress-free and enjoyable as possible!

Start with the Bedroom

Starting with the most important room, your bedroom. This is where you will spend most of your personal time and be able to feel at home and comfortable. It’s important to create a space that you feel cosy and settled in, as this will help you enjoy your university experience and make the thought of being away from home less daunting! Putting your personal stamp on your bedroom will enable you to create the perfect space for you, where you can work, relax, socialise and so on. Introducing items such as a practical oak desk will add essential storage space to your room, as well as creating a space for you to work and concentrate properly. You can then think about home comforts, such as a cosy duvet set, a warm dressing gown, maybe even add some stylish cushions to your bed to lift the atmosphere and add some character too. These comforts will help you feel much more at home. You then have your personal touches, such as family photographs, posters or even items that reflect your personality, for example you may want to take your guitar or musical instrument, or even your favourite piece of artwork to brighten the room. Don’t forget the essentials however, such as hangers, storage boxes, mirrors, lighting and a laundry basket!

Kitchen Essentials

In most student accommodation, the kitchen is a shared space, and you often find other people will remember to bring items you may have forgotten! There are however some essential items that you’ll need to keep in your selected cupboards, as these will help you with day to day meal preparation and so on. The most important thing is a kettle and toaster, as you never know when you might fancy a nice cup of tea with some toast! Next thing, pans. It’s crazy just how much you need pans for, even cooking simple, quick meals such as pasta. Take a selection of pans from a frying pan, saucepan (in a few sizes), even a baking tray may come in use at some point! To go with these items, you’ll then need to remember to take a colander, measuring jug and maybe even some mixing bowls, as this will enable you to make almost any meal you fancy and practice those culinary skills. You then have the obvious essentials such as cutlery, a knife set, mugs, plates, bowls and so on, but you only really need enough for yourself, as others will be taking their own too.

Additional Extras

Once you’ve prepared for the two main spaces in your new university accommodation, there are other elements to consider that you may need to include in your packing. Taking a set of comfortable towels is the first, as this is a really important essential that many people forget to include. Another is a waste bin, which as weird as it sounds, is also an essential. Whilst having your kitchen bin is great, you need one for your bedroom too, as you don’t want to have to go to the kitchen every time you have a little rubbish to throw away. For your workspace, taking some useful items such as a cable tidy, chargers, calendar, whiteboard and even a clock will keep things organised and also add some character to your room.
