Pet proof your home

There’s nothing more comforting and warming than having your furry little companion keeping you company in your home, and many go as far as to say a home isn’t quite a home without a pet living there. Having a pet is very much like having a child, in a number of different ways. For starters, they require constant attention and love to be played with, but you then have the cheeky, mischievous goings on that require you to keep one eye open at all times! Whilst they can be little monkeys when it comes to nibbling the sofa leg or weeing on the rug, there are a handful of ways in which you can pet-proof your home, without losing style!

Colour Choices

It’s a well-known fact that, if you have a cat, dog, rabbit or even hamster, its highly likely that they will shed. Hair shedding doesn’t always seem like as much of an issue until you add dark colours to the mix. Dark colours are never a good choice when it comes to items such as rugs, sofa and carpets, as these will show the hairs straight away. Dependant on your pet’s hair colour, opt for materials and colours that match their coats, this way you won’t be worrying about the constant hair on show throughout your house!

Closed Storage

Whether it’s a television cable, laptop charger or even the Monopoly box, if your furry little friend wants it, and can see it, they will more than likely get it. Open storage is a huge thing to avoid when you have a furry monster running around, as it’s almost an open invitation for them to explore and see what fun they can have. Keeping your storage closed will help to protect any exciting looking cables, as well as preventing your possessions from becoming your pets next favourite toy.

Durable Fabrics

When your warm and cosy on the sofa, it often seems unfair to leave your pet laid out on the floor, and snuggle soften seem like a much better option! If you’re planning on inviting your furry friend up onto the sofa or bed, investing in furniture made of durable materials will be hugely beneficial. Similarly, you can invest in some durable, thick throws to put down whenever your pet is on the furniture, as this will prevent the material from wearing badly or becoming marked from their paws.

Protect the Legs

For many pets, a large, oak dining table leg can be hugely attractive, especially for dogs and rabbits who love nothing more than to chew wooden sticks. As a result of this, it’s important to protect your chair, sofa and table legs from any unwanted nibbling. Applying some foam padding to the area will stop your pet from marking your oak, and once they are old enough to have been house trained you can remove the padding.

Plenty of Toys

Just like a child, your pet will be entertained for hours when you give them an exciting selection of toys. Choose a selection of soft, squeaky and rope toys so that they can play in a variety of different ways. Not only will bringing toys into the house provide fun for your furry friend, but it gives you the perfect opportunity to play with them and keep them happy!
