brightening your interiors

Maximising the natural light within your interiors is hugely beneficial in a number of different ways. Not only will you brighten and enhance your décor, you will also find yourself saving money on the electricity bills, not to mention an instant positive lift in your own mental attitude and lifestyle. It’s very easy to make the most of the natural lighting available to you, with a few simple additions to your décor or a few changes to the interiors, you can really make a difference in how your home looks and feels.

Existing Windows

Dependant on the position of your property, at least one area of your home will have a strong amount of natural light for the duration of the day. Start with your existing windows, as this is the main source of natural lighting at any point of the day. If you have blinds or curtains, invest in some curtain ties to keep your curtains out of the way throughout the daytime, allowing as much natural light to filter through the room as possible. As for blinds, keeping them as open as you can will ensure you have as much natural light as possible. Keeping your blinds at half way will still enable natural light to flow through, however, you won’t be gaining as much as you could with the blinds fully open.

Reflective Areas

By placing a mirror opposite a window, you are able to create a whole new source for your natural lighting. By introducing a mirror to your interiors, you are enabling the natural light to bounce from the mirror's surface onto the rest of the room, instantly brightening the room beautifully. Mirrors will also reflect the views provided from the existing window, which will create an open, spacious feel, enhancing your décor and making the room feel fresh and larger than it may actually be.

You then have reflective areas such as your kitchen worktops, the splash-back for your cooker and even the glass on your oak display cabinet. These items may not like they would play a part in maximising the natural light within your home, but they actually have a huge influence on how the light will travel throughout the room.

Light Colour Scheme

Introducing a neutral, light colour scheme to your interiors will instantly help to lift the atmosphere and aid natural light with flowing through each room. Light colours such as white and beige are easy to use on the walls and ceiling, as you can then introduce bold, bright colours through your furnishings and final details. White is a great colour for reflecting natural light, therefore it will work perfectly when it comes to helping the natural light flow through each room in your home.

Keep it Clean

Cleaning your windows, light fixtures and bulbs will ensure that the light you have is able to shine bright and clear. It’s very difficult to maximise the amount of natural light filtering through your windows when they’re dirty, so giving them a good clean will ensure the light can flow through with ease.
